The Roots, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, and Neil Young are just some of the iconic American musicians who have made their mark on pop music.
But none of them have been as instrumental in the creation of pop culture as the late-career music producer John Waters, whose contributions span decades of music history.
Waters, who died Friday, was the founder of the legendary music production company Waters Group, whose recordings include The Beatles’ “Love Me Do” and The Rolling Stone’s “All My Loving,” as well as The Rolling, Crosby, Nash, & Hamilton, the musical comedy series.
The company also produced The Beatles albums “Yesterday,” “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and “Let It Be.”
In addition to his contributions to pop music, Waters also contributed to film and television, including directing The Rocky Horror Picture Show and scoring the Emmy-winning film The Sound of Music.
He also directed episodes of the CBS sitcom Family Matters, and wrote and produced the musical-drama The Black Cauldron.
“He is a very important musician in the history of music, because he helped bring people together,” John Waters said in a statement.
“And he’s also a very good friend, and he’s a friend of mine.
He was a great guy, a really nice guy.
And I wish he was here with us.”
Waters was born in New York City on March 12, 1951, the son of music teacher and jazz musician John Waters and his wife, Carol.
He earned his undergraduate degree at the Juilliard School, where he earned a degree in composition, but dropped out to pursue a career in film, with stints in the films The Music Man, The Music of John Cage, and The Music Teacher.
He then moved to Hollywood in 1968 to work on the television series The Music Classroom.
In 1970, he joined the music production staff of his former band, the The Rolling Thunder, which produced such hits as “She’s My Everything,” “Truckin'” and “Solo.”
He later took over production duties on a string of film projects, including the film The Music Is My Business, starring Tom Cruise.
The film also included the popular song “Songs from the Bottom.”
Wales left The Rolling Band in 1981, when he became the lead singer of The Roots.
His group recorded three albums under the name John Waters &.; Waters Group and were nominated for six Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Album, Best New Artist and Best American Band.
The group released a string a number of singles, including “Lucky,” “Love You More,” and the single “You’re the Best Thing About Me.”
The Rolling Stones released their first album, “Rolling Stones: The Complete Recordings,” in 1985.
They also recorded several more albums.
In 1986, the group recorded their second album, The New Album, which included the singles “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Stairway to Heaven.”
The Stones also released the music video for the song “It Ain’t Me Babe.”
In 1988, Waters and The Roots were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the group won two Grammys in 1992 for their record, The Last Time.
The band recorded a number other albums under his name, including 1991’s “Stones From a Black Hole,” and 1996’s “The Complete Collection.”
The band also released a documentary, “The Story of The Stones,” which documented the band’s rise to fame.
In 1997, Waters was inducted in the Rock &roll Hall of Honor.
The Stones and The Stones &) were inducteds in 1997.
In 2004, The Stones released a film, “Roots: The Rise and Fall of The Rolling ‘N’ Rollers,” which was nominated for two Oscars, including best documentary.
In 2005, Waters returned to the music business with the release of his third album, which featured the singles, “All Along the Watchtower,” “Cotton Eye,” and a number songs off of his last studio album, Stones &s;Houses of the Holy.
“Waters said the group would continue to release new music.
In 2009, The Rock and Rolling Stones were inductees into the National Recording Hall of Famer Hall of Music Hall of Records, and their fourth studio album The Rolling Song, was released in 2016.
Wales was inductee into the Recording Industry Association of America Hall of Famous Artists in 2017.
